Token creator

Compose a round, square or hexagonal token from an image, frames and ornaments, then export it as PNG or WebP for Foundry VTT, Roll20 and other virtual tabletops. The tool is free and needs no account.

What is the token creator?

The token creator is a free JDR Ninja tool for making tokens for your characters, NPCs and monsters. Starting from an image, you choose a shape (round, square or hexagonal) and a frame, add a background, an ornament, a shadow or a glow if you wish, then export a square PNG or WebP file of 128 to 2048 pixels. You can then import it into Foundry VTT, Roll20, Owlbear Rodeo or any other virtual tabletop.

Free, no account

No sign-up, no watermark and no limit on the number of exports. There is nothing to install.

A character that breaks out of the frame

Let the character's head, or the whole character, break out of the frame, with a drop shadow if you like.

Ready for your virtual tabletop

You export the token as PNG or WebP, from 128 to 2048 pixels. If you add a margin, the editor shows the scale to enter in Foundry VTT.

What it looks like

A frame for every creature rank

Ten fantasy frames mark a creature's rank, from minion to legendary, in an ally or an enemy version, so your players spot the boss on the map at a glance. The other frames and the ornaments are sorted by theme: simple, fantasy, horror, science fiction, steampunk and nature.

The token editor with the frame library open on the left: an adventurer's portrait in a gold frame set with sapphires in the middle, its layers on the right.

A portrait cut out in two clicks

On a portrait with a plain background, “Remove background” selects the backdrop, then the “Make transparent” button clears it. The magic wand removes an area of one colour, and the eraser cleans up the edges or restores what was erased. The image, the frame, the background and the shadow stay separate layers, each with its own opacity and blend mode.

The finished token: a bearded adventurer in a leather hat inside a gold frame, with the retouch tools and the layer list on the right.

A file ready for the grid

The file is square and transparent around the shape, so it drops straight onto a grid square. At 512 pixels it suits Foundry VTT, and WebP is lighter than PNG for the same image. You may use it freely, including commercially.

The export panel open over the token: PNG or WebP format, the 512-pixel size, the export button and the note on how the graphic elements may be used.

How to create a token

  1. Choose the token shape: round, square or hexagonal.
  2. Choose a frame from the library, by theme or by creature rank, or import your own.
  3. Import an image from your device, paste it or drop it onto the editor, then adjust it.
  4. Add a background, ornaments, a shadow or a glow.
  5. For a pop-out effect, remove the image background, then make it break out of the frame.
  6. Export the token as PNG or WebP, at the size you want.

The graphic elements provided (frames and ornaments) may only be used inside this tool. Your exported tokens are free to use, including commercially. See the terms of use

Frequently asked questions

Can I create a square or hexagonal token?
Yes. Choose the shape before the frame: the frame list changes with the shape. The hexagon comes in two orientations, pointy top or flat top, to match your virtual tabletop's grid.
Can I use my own frame?
Yes. In the library, “Import a frame” adds a PNG or WebP with a transparent centre, which then works like the built-in frames. It is not kept: import it again on your next visit.
How do I make a character break out of the frame?
First remove the image background, then tick “Break out of the frame” and place the line: everything above it goes in front of the frame. Add some margin to leave room for the head.
My token with a margin looks smaller in Foundry VTT. What should I do?
Increase the image scale in the token configuration: 1.25 for a 10% margin, 1.67 for a 20% margin. The editor shows the value to use under the margin setting.
How do I import my token into Roll20 or Owlbear Rodeo?
Export it as PNG, a format both tabletops accept. In Roll20, drag the file from your computer onto the tabletop: it is added to your art library and placed where you drop it. In Owlbear Rodeo, import it as a character, then drag it onto the scene.
Can I use my exported tokens freely?
Yes. You may use, modify, share, distribute or sell the tokens you export. The graphic elements provided may only be used inside this tool: they may not be extracted or reused separately.
Is the tool free?
Yes, completely. No account, no sign-up and no export limit.
Is my token saved?
No. Nothing is kept from one visit to the next: if you close the tab or leave the page, the token in progress is lost. Export it before you go.
Which export formats and sizes are available?
PNG and WebP, in square format. The preset sizes are 256, 512, 768, 1024 and 2048 pixels, plus a custom size from 128 to 2048 pixels. The default size, 512, suits Foundry VTT and most virtual tabletops.
